The soul revelation across the Channel in 2007. At just 24 years of age, Amy Winehouse is making headlines and hovering at the top of the charts. The punk diva, who has a voice worthy of Aretha Franklin, has been an unstoppable success.
Despite an image associated with drugs and alcohol, Amy Winehouse is a talented artist. Her songs “Rehab” and “You know I’m no good” are proof of this. She finally succumbed to her addictions when she died of an overdose on July 23rd, 2011.
A childhood rooted in music
Resurrection of the singers of the mythical Motown studio, Amy Jade Winehouse was born in Enfield, North London, England in 1983 into a family steeped in music (her grandmother, Cynthia, dated saxophonist Ronnie Scott and her uncle is a trumpet player).
By the age of 13, she was already playing on the stage, taking acting lessons at Sylvia Young Art School, but her already strong character pushed her towards the door. Undisciplined, she was expelled after two years. She will finish her boarding schooling at the Brit School in Croydon.
Amy Winehouse and the first prizes
The success story began when, at the age of 18, Amy Winehouse landed her first contract with Island/Universal. In 2003, her first opus “Franck” was nominated for the Brit Awards and already seduced many fans in Europe and the United States. But it was not until the release of “Back to black” in 2006 that she was named Best Female Artist 2007 at the Brit Awards and received the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song and Music for Lyrics in 2008.
The bad girl and the celebrity press
Despite her triumph, Amy Winehouse cultivates her bad girl side by displaying piercings and big tattoos and is also known as an alcoholic and temperamental. She even prefers to look like an idiot in the eyes of journalists: “I don’t watch the news. You know, I’m pretty ignorant, not very intelligent. I’m just a musician. (Liberation of 01/08/2007). An amusing game for Amy Winehouse who was once a music journalist in a celebrity news agency and whom her friends call brilliant (high school graduation with honors).
Bad habits for the artist
More delirious than a Joss Stone, less superficial than a Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse is closer to Billie Holiday with whom she shares a taste for drink, illicit substances, and tumultuous love affairs. Her painful break-up with Blake Fielder – now her husband – is the origin of her second album.
For the past few years, Amy Winehouse has been noticed more for her alcohol addiction than for her music. 2011 has been marked for her by numerous unsuccessful detox cures.
On June 18, Amy Winehouse gave a concert in Belgrade, which was to launch a big summer tour in Europe. But it was a disaster for the singer, who arrived on stage completely drunk and booed by the audience. All her concerts were canceled after this performance.
A Brutal End
Following this performance, Amy Winehouse returns home to London. It is there that she was found dead on Saturday, July 23rd, 2011. Amy Winehouse was only 27 years old.
