Nargis is one of the most famous and successful actresses in the Indian Cinema. She is a very well renowned Bollywood star and has done some amazing work in the span of her career as well. the actress worked in over 50 moves and is popularly considered as a legend that Bollywood has ever seen. Apart from being a wonderful actress, she was also seen as involved in social work especially with spastic children. She was a volunteer at the Spastics Society of India for a very long time.


Born in the year 1929, on June 1st, Nargis was brought up in Kolkata, West Bengal. However, later on, she shifted to Allahabad along with her family. Nargis’s mother was a classical singer and it was through her interest, that Nargis was introduced in the world of acting and cinematics. Nargis always wanted to become a doctor. However, her mother had a dream that she would build her profession by being an actress and contributor to the Indian Cinema. Following her mother’s footsteps, Nargis gave some excellent work to the industry and her films and performances broke several records and made her an exceptional legend in the history of the Indian Cinema.

Love Life, Relationships, and Husband of Nargis

Nargis was known to be very much in love with the actor Raj Kapoor. However, at the time Raj Kapoor was married to a woman called Krishna. They had a relationship for a very long time. But when Nargis wanted to continue the relationship and turn into something serious, Raj Kapoor backed off and refused to divorce his wife for Nargis.

That left Nargis heartbroken. However, another famous personality, Sunil Dutt came into Nargis’s life. It is rumored that there was a fire on the set of the movie, Mother India, and Nargis was caught up in it. it was Sunil Dutt who saved her from the fire and it was then when Nargis fell deep in love with him. Their relationship soon turned serious and they decided to get married. After getting married, Nargis changed her religion from Muslim to Hindu and she also changed her name to Nirmala Dutt from Nargis. They got married on March 11th, 1958., and soon she gave birth to three wonderful children, a son, Sanjay Dutt who is again a famous actor on its own, and two daughters, Namrata and Priya.

Priya is a member of the Indian Parliament and Namrata is married to another famous Indian actor, Kumar Gaurav.

Career and Work Life of Nargis

Nargis gave her debut when she was only 6 years old. She gave her debut in the movie called Talashe Haq which was released in the year 1935. She also worked as a child artist in on more movies which were directed by her mother called Madam Fashion. It was her second movie. Then later on, when she turned around 14 years old, she did another movie called Taqdeer and it was released in the year 1943. The movie was directed and produced by Mehboob Khan. Then there was no looking back.

She did a whole lot of movies after that movie including Barsaat, Awaara, Shree 420, Andaz, Deedar, Chori, and many more.

Awards and Recognition

With so many great movies came great honors. She was honored with a lot of titles and awards including Filmfare Award, Padma Shri Award, National Film Award. Filmfare Best Actress Award, Greatest Actress of All Times, and also Best Artist of the Millennium.
